Notes
- Students graduating from Newhouse may devote no more than 42 of the 122 credits required for graduation to courses in the Newhouse School. Any courses above the 42-credit hour limit will increase the total hours required for graduation.
- Students must complete a grammar competency as part of their degree requirements. There will be two ways students can satisfy this competency:
– First, by passing a grammar competency exam during their first semester on campus. The exam will be given twice – once before the end of the first week of classes and a second time prior to registration the next semester. A passing grade on the exam will fulfill the competency requirement.
– Secondly, by passing COM 101, a 0-credit remedial grammar course which will be mandatory for students who fail the grammar competency exam. This course can be repeated until a passing grade is earned and the competency is met. - The Advertising Department strongly recommends that students not take ADV 206 and ADV 208 together. Exceptions are made for junior transfer students only. ADV 206: Advertising Practice in a Diverse Society should be taken before ADV 208: The Big Idea in Advertising.
- Students should not take both ADV 201: Best Ads in the Universe and ADV 206: Advertising Practice in a Diverse Society.
- Students are strongly encouraged to take ADV 509: Advertising Research and Planning: A Case Study Approach before taking ADV 425: Integrated Advertising Campaigns. Marketing minors and Whitman dual majors may petition to substitute MAR 356 Marketing Research for ADV 509: Advertising Research and Planning: A Case Study Approach. This substitution will fulfill the ADV research requirement but will not be counted as Newhouse credits. Such students will need to take three Newhouse elective credits in place of the ADV 509 credits.
- Tracks. Students must declare a track at the end of their sophomore year. Students in the Insights & Strategy track must take coursework that adds up to nine credits. One course must be an ADV course. Students may choose more than one ADV course.
- The Global Experience may be fulfilled by studying abroad or by taking an approved class. A list of courses that fulfill this requirement can be found in the Newhouse Guidebook. If a student chooses to take a Newhouse class to fulfill this requirement, the additional Newhouse hours will be added to the 122 credits needed for graduation if the student has reached the 42 Newhouse-credit maximum.
- Advertising students are limited to three credits of internship in communications out of the 122 required for graduation. Singly enrolled Newhouse students are not permitted to enroll in non-communications experience credit without special petition. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors may receive credit for internship experiences by petition. (Note: Internship credits do not count towards ADV requirement of Insights & Strategy Track.)
