A. Skills Requirements

Basic Writing
3 credits

CAS 100 or WRT 105 or 109: Writing Studio (1 course)
Complete in first semester.

Foreign Languages
8 credits

Two courses in foreign languages.
Complete in first year.

Quantitative Skills
3-4 credits

One course from the approved list of courses in applied mathematics and statistics.
Complete in first or second year.

Computer Programming
3 credits

CPS 196: Introduction to Computer Programming
(or other programming class by petition)
Complete in first or second year.

Writing Intensive
6 Credits

Two courses from the approved Writing Intensive course list.
Complete in first and second years.

Proficiency Requirement
0-4 credits

Proficiency in Foreign Languages or Mathematics must be demonstrated by completing one of the following:

  1. A language course numbered 201 or higher
  2. A mathematics sequence
  3. A calculus course with a grade of C or higher

Humanities
9 credits

Three courses from the divisional list in the Humanities.

Complete in first and second years.

C. Major Requirements in Communications

Newhouse School Major

31-38 credits

COM 107: Communications and Society. (3 credits)
COM 101: Practical Grammar for Public Communications (1 credit)
COM 117: Multimedia Storytelling (3 credits)

Complete in first year.

A major must be declared no later than the end of the second year.

Courses are taken over the four years.

D. Major Requirements in Information Studies

Major in Information Management and Technology
39-40 credits

Courses are taken over the four years.

Major in Information Management and Technology
42-43 credits

Courses are taken over the four years.

E. Arts and Sciences Electives

Arts and Sciences Electives
4-27 credits

Since some courses may fulfill more than one requirement, the number of Arts and Sciences elective credits a student has varies according to how he or she chooses to fulfill the Skills and Divisional requirements. Elective courses may be chosen from any area in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Complete in second, third, fourth years.

Arts and Sciences Electives
4-26 credits

Since some courses may fulfill more than one requirement, the number of Arts and Sciences elective credits a student has varies according to how he or she chooses to fulfill the Skills and Divisional requirements. Elective courses may be chosen from any area in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Complete in second, third, fourth years.

F. Summary Notes

A minimum of 132-146 credits are required for graduation.

A minimum of 65 credits MUST be from courses taught by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Depending upon a student’s major, a maximum of 0-6 credits (of the 132-146) MAY be experience credit (internships) as outlined in the School Rules.

A minimum of 30 credits MUST be in a major program in communications. If students take additional Newhouse credits which are not part of the major, these credits will not be part of the minimum number of credits needed to graduate. They will be extra credits.

Thirty-nine to forty credits MUST be in the Information Management and Technology major. Students who complete the ICC: Interactive Communications Courses as part of their Newhouse major may petition the School of Information Studies to evaluate these credits for use in the Information Management and Technology major.

A minimum of 132-149 credits are required for graduation.
